TMJ DISORDERS

The jaw is only one piece of the puzzle. Your muscles, fascia, bones and everyday habits all play a role in how TMJ symptoms develop and persist.

At Triumph Chiropractic LDN, we look beyond the jaw itself, assessing the relationship between your jaw, neck, posture and surrounding muscles. We use personalised care to address areas of tension and restricted movement, alongside practical advice and exercises to support better jaw function and everyday comfort.

TMJ-related symptoms can include jaw pain or stiffness, clicking or popping, difficulty opening the mouth, headaches and tension through the jaw, face and neck.

Jaw symptoms can have a number of contributing factors, including clenching or grinding, stress, prolonged postures, muscular tension and changes in jaw or neck movement.

Our approach begins with a thorough assessment of your jaw, neck and surrounding musculature, alongside your symptoms and relevant lifestyle factors. Where appropriate, care may include chiropractic techniques, soft-tissue work, dry needling, movement advice and exercises designed around your individual presentation.

If you are experiencing persistent jaw discomfort or changes in jaw movement, an assessment can help establish what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you.

TMJ â€‹â€‹FAQs

1. Can stress make jaw tension worse?
Yes. Stress can contribute to increased jaw clenching and muscular tension, which may aggravate existing jaw symptoms.

2. Can TMJ problems cause headaches?
Jaw and facial muscle tension can be associated with headaches, particularly around the temples and forehead. However, headaches can have many different causes.

3. Will you assess my jaw as well as my neck?
Yes. We assess the jaw alongside the neck, posture and surrounding musculature to understand how these areas may be contributing to your symptoms.

Is TMJ treatment painful?
Treatment for the jaw is gentle. Some tender muscles may feel sore when pressure is applied, but we work within your comfort level and adjust as we go. Mild soreness for a day afterwards can happen and usually settles quickly.

How many sessions will I need for TMJ pain?
It varies from person to person. Some people notice a change within a few visits, while longer-standing problems may need more time alongside home exercises. We'll review your progress regularly and won't recommend ongoing care unless it's helping.

Should I see a dentist or a chiropractor for jaw pain?
It depends on the cause. If your pain is linked to your teeth, bite, or you need a night guard, a dentist is the right first step. If the problem involves tight jaw muscles, neck tension or posture, a chiropractor may help. Many patients benefit from both, and we're happy to work alongside your dentist.

When should I see a doctor instead?
Please see a GP or dentist urgently if you have jaw pain with swelling, fever, a recent injury, numbness, a jaw that is locked shut or open, or jaw pain alongside chest pain or shortness of breath, which may need emergency care.

What can I do at home to ease TMJ pain?
Helpful steps include eating softer foods for a while, avoiding chewing gum, resting your jaw with lips together and teeth slightly apart, applying warmth to tight muscles, and noticing daytime clenching. We'll give you specific exercises suited to your jaw at your appointment.
